Beyond our fundamental, infinite, inviolable human value, we are not perfect. The reality is that we are always in a state of incompleteness. We can only see so far, think so much, hear so much, and learn so much at any one time. Even a lifetime is not enough to fully comprehend the reality of anything.
At most, we can learn some part of some things, but never all of them. We are limited by our human limitations. Even with all our technology, we are still dust on a dust ship when compared to the vastness of the cosmos. Moreover, we are not able to ever fully understand ourselves. We are always in a state of learning. No person knows everything about something, let alone everything about everything.
Therefore, we are always in need of learning and of adjusting, adapting, and changing what we currently know. We are always in need of learning more. The mind of any single individual is not large enough to contain the knowledge of the universe, and the lifespan of any human is not long enough to capture all of it.
The universe is so vast, and its secrets are so deep that even the collective of humanity will never uncover all of it. Furthermore, the universe itself and our planet are alive, growing, changing, developing – as we are – so the things we learn today may not be enough for tomorrow.
Therefore, we all must be humble, and beyond this, we must be honest – that we do not know everything. Some would say we know hardly anything. The great Socrates would truthfully say that compared to the number of things there are to know, we know nothing.
This is not just true for those born into families that struggle to pay the bills or those with difficult lives. Where the lack of knowledge and knowing how to solve problems is a reality that can’t be avoided. It is true for people who have taken up positions of leadership and power – politicians, business leaders, religious leaders, academics, and experts in their fields. We must understand and remember that they, like us, also lack knowledge. They are just as ignorant of the world and the universe as we are.
Those we see as great, those we place above us, also lack knowledge like we do. Even in things they claim expertise in, they are mostly ignorant. We should never assume anyone has perfect knowledge of anything but rather attribute the same state of not knowing to them as we do to ourselves. Remember, they are human like we are, and therefore, they are ignorant, lacking knowledge, knowing little to nothing, like we do.
This means that there is no human being above questioning. No one should be blindly followed, and no one is above us or should be seen as different from ourselves. We are all the same. Every leader, every politician, every general, every religious leader, every academic, is lacking in knowledge, is open to questioning, and needs to learn more.
Therefore, we should remove any pedestal we have for any other human being in relation to knowledge. We should return them to the same ground that we walk on. Respect them for the things they’ve learned, but never see these things as sacred or complete. The things they say are open to questioning, just like the things we say are. The things they preach or believe to be the words of God are open to questioning, doubt, and criticism. No person knows everything, whether they wear a crown, a skull cap, or a suit and tie. No woman is above questioning.
We are all brothers and sisters in ignorance, in the pursuit of knowledge. Always on the path but never arriving. Forever students. This is the truth of things, the truth of the universe. Not abiding by it leads to oppression, the blind following of people who do not deserve any leadership, manipulation, self-destruction, war, and death.
Do not put another individual, no matter how fancy their words are or how complicated and deep their sentences seem, above yourself. You are equals under God. Though we can learn from each other, we must never forget that the teacher is a student also. Give respect and appreciation, but never submission or worship.
In addition to the fact that every human being lacks knowledge, even our foremost experts, though they should be respected for their learning, do not know everything there is to know. Compared to what there is to know, our most brilliant experts still know little to nothing. This is to say nothing of our human brothers and sisters who claim prestige for themselves and the appearance of knowledge, though they have not engaged in any real study or learning. They know less than nothing. In both cases, neither deserves a pedestal or becomes superior to other human beings due to their knowledge. They are still, like us all, ignorant of most things and will, in many of the things they know, be incorrect. Therefore, they remain with their feet on the ground like the rest of us.
